On either side of the hatch are two rubber stoppers. Turn them a turn or so clockwise to move them outwards. Assuming it's the boot rattling (which is what it always was with my Civics), that will solve the problem.

It also could be the jack in the tire well.
mine did this. All i did was take a old towel and wrap it around the jack and put it back in the metal support thing. Solved the problem.

hey when i drive and go over small bumps, something in the back rattles. anyone know what it is? i took out everything and it still does it

heh advancing the lil bumpstops doesn't always seem to work... they are adjusted the whole way out on my si and it still squeeks grrrr
